About Ali Karimli<\/h3>\n

Ali Karimli, born on 28 April 1965 in the Saatly District of Azerbaijan, is a well-known Azerbaijani politician and the long-standing chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP). He has been a key figure in the country’s opposition for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

Karimli served in the Soviet army and studied law at Baku State University. During his student years, he started the “Yurd” (Homeland) movement to support democratic reforms and organised protests against the communist government.<\/p>\n

He started his professional life as a teacher at his alma mater and a writer for the independent newspaper Azadl\u0131q. During the presidency of Abulfaz Elchibey in 1993, he served as Secretary of State, but resigned after the coup put Heydar Aliyev in power.<\/p>\n

Karimli was elected to parliament in 1995 and 2000, and in 2000 he became the leader of the “reformist” wing of the APFP.<\/p>\n

Karimli has been subjected to state-led harassment and persecution for over 20 years. Since 2006, he has been effectively banned from travelling on the grounds of the authorities’ refusal to renew his international passport. He has also been subjected to numerous administrative detentions, police violence during peaceful rallies\u2014notably in 2019 when he was beaten in custody\u2014and constant surveillance. His internet access is frequently restricted, and several of his close associates, including drivers and bodyguards, have been targeted with criminal charges<\/a>. In July 2015 and July 2025, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that there were violations of his rights in connection to his 20-year travel ban<\/a> and concerning the unlawful and disproportionate measures against<\/a>him as a participant in public assemblies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Case description<\/h3>\n

On 29 November 2025, security officers from the State Security Service (SSS) broke into Karimli’s house in Baku and <\/span>took him into custody<\/span><\/a><\/span>. He was <\/span>kept incommunicado<\/span><\/a><\/span> for two days before being charged with “actions aimed at the violent seizure of power” and “violent change of the constitutional order” under Criminal Code Article 278.1.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Azerbaijani government claims Karimli’s arrest is connected to a criminal case against <\/span>Ramiz Mehdiyev<\/a><\/span>, the former head of the Presidential Administration. During the search, investigators alleged they had found a “secret letter” from Mehdiyev in Karimli’s home. These claims were denied by his party, stating that the letter was planted to frame Karimli. During the same time, his deputy, Mammad Ibrahim, and several other party members were also taken into custody. Officials say that Mehdiyev, who was already charged with high treason, was giving Karimli money to plan a coup.<\/span><\/p>\n

On 1 December 2025, the Sabayil District Court <\/span>remanded Karimli<\/a><\/span> until 13 February 2026. He is currently being held at the State Security Service detention centre.<\/span><\/p>\n
