He has a secondary education and is a member of the Azerbaijani Popular Front Party (APFP). He was a former bodyguard of APFP’s chairman, Ali Karimli.

Ahmadov has been imprisoned since 15 April 2020. He was initially sentenced to thirty days of administrative detention during the COVID-19 period for violation of quarantine rules and failure to comply with police orders (Administrative Offences Code Articles 211 and 535). He denied these charges, stating that he had permission to be outside.

On 15 May 2020, after exhaustion of the administrative arrest period, Ahmadov was not released. Instead, he was taken directly from administrative detention to the Prosecutor General’s Office, where he was charged and subjected to pre-trial detention without being allowed to notify his lawyer. Instead, he was represented by a state-appointed lawyer at the subsequent court hearing.

He was charged under several articles of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code, including Article 214-1 (financing of terrorism), Article 28.281.2 (preparation for public calls against the state by a group of persons), and Article 233-1.2.1 (illegal acquisition and possession of prohibited items). The criminal case alleged that Gabil Mammadov, a harsh critic of the Azerbaijani government on YouTube, owed Ahmadov 5,500 AZN (approx. $3,200) and a pair of glasses equipped with a camera in order to support a coup in Azerbaijan. In 2020, the court sentenced him to thirteen years in prison.

Ahmadov denies the charges. Before his arrest, he served as a volunteer bodyguard for APFP leader Ali Karimli, and claims he was targeted and framed because he refused to let go of Karimli’s arm when he was being detained during an opposition rally on 19 October 2019. He asserts that his criminal case was opened on 29 October 2019 – shortly after that rally – and that a warrant was issued for Gabil Mammadov’s arrest on the same day.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://free-anar.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/square_post2-4.png” alt=”Niyamaddin Ahmadov
An Azerbaijani PFPA activist, currently serving a 13-year prison sentence on disputed charges, known for his role as the bodyguard of party leader Ali Karimli.
” title_text=”square_post2″ _builder_version=”4.25.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-6px|||||” animation_style=”slide” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.25.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.25.2″ _module_preset=”default” min_height=”450px” custom_margin=”-22px|||||” custom_padding=”3px||0px|||” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Case description

In March 2024, while held in Penitentiary No. 12, Ahmadov went on a fifteen-day hunger strike in protest against the violation of his right to meet with his family and the obstacles placed on the delivery of food parcels. Additionally, in March, he was sentenced to six days in solitary confinement for allegedly possessing a poem critical of the government.

Although he denies the charges, Ahmadov’s sentence was upheld by both the Baku Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. Complaints about Ahmadov’s detention, torture, and trial have been submitted to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

On 11 July 2024, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) issued a decision in the case of Niyamaddin Ahmadov v. Azerbaijan. Ahmadov had lodged a complaint alleging an unfair trial in administrative offence proceedings, which he argued constituted a violation of Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights (signed 4 November 1950). The Court ultimately struck the case out of its list based on a unilateral declaration submitted by the Azerbaijani Government. In this declaration, the Government acknowledged the violation of the right to a fair trial and offered to pay Ahmadov €900 in damages plus costs, which the ECHR accepted as both adequate compensation and a final resolution.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.25.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||-6px|||” custom_padding=”||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Resources about Niyamaddin Ahmadov

All of the Campaign’s resources are created under Creative Commons License under CC0 conditions, meaning these resources are public dedication tools, with no copyright, putt into the worldwide public domain.

Download blue background poster (PNG)
Download yellow background poster (PNG)

Download blue square picture (PNG)
Download yellow square pictuer (PNG)

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://free-anar.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/overview.png” alt=”Niyamaddin Ahmadov An Azerbaijani PFPA activist, currently serving a 13-year prison sentence on disputed charges, known for his role as the bodyguard of party leader Ali Karimli.” title_text=”overview” _builder_version=”4.25.2″ _module_preset=”default” animation_style=”slide” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_button button_url=”https://free-anar.site/newsletter/” button_text=”SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEWSLETTER TO STAY INFORMED” button_alignment=”left” _builder_version=”4.25.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#f3dc95″ button_bg_color=”#d32329″ button_border_width=”0px” button_border_radius=”11px” button_font=”–et_global_heading_font||||||||” button_icon=”9||divi||400″ animation_style=”slide” animation_direction=”bottom” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

PFPA activist, currently serving a 13-year prison sentence on disputed charges, known for his role as the bodyguard of party leader Ali Karimli.About Niyamaddin Ahmadov Niyamaddin Ahmadov was born on 14 May 1990 in the Tovuz district of Azerbaijan.
